  • If the Moon Were Only 1 Pixel - A tediously accurate map of the solar system
The amounts of horizontal scrolling will highlight how vast space actually is.

I like the button, in the lower-right corner, that scrolls through the solar system at the speed of light : I reached Pluto faster than that !!!

  • Failure Found to Be an "Essential Prerequisite" for Success
Every winner begins as a loser, but not every failure leads to success. And what ultimately separates the winners from the losers, certainly is not persistence.
Trying again and again only works if you learn from your previous failures. The idea is to work smart, not hard. You have to figure out what worked and what didn’t, and then focus on what needs to be improved instead of thrashing around and changing everything.
The people who failed didn’t necessarily work less [than those who succeeded]. They could actually have worked more; it’s just that they made more unnecessary changes.

One such key indicator [statistical signatures that separate successful groups from nonsuccessful groups and make it possible to predict ultimate outcomes] (besides keeping the stuff that works and focusing on what doesn’t) is the time between consecutive failed attempts, which should decrease steadily. In other words, the faster you fail, the better your chances of success, and the more time between attempts, the more likely you are to fail again.

What matters is how people fail, how they respond to failure and where those failures lead.

  • What Happens to Your Body on No Sleep
Effects on the brain are very impressive !

As for performance in sports :
“What we tend to see are changes in perception of effort. Everything feels harder, so you’ll do worse on a performance test, not because of physiological changes, but because your perception of effort has changed.”

And that’s a fact worth broadcasting, says Halson, because everyone has felt that panic after only managing a few hours of sleep before a big race. You’ll certainly feel tired, and your brain might be a little foggy, but you can still extract your fitness potential. “It’s important to tell athletes that if you get one bad night of sleep, the 20 years of training you have previously done doesn’t go away,” Halson says. “Your fatigability may have gone up a little bit after one bad night, but if it’s an important event, adrenaline usually kicks in.”

  • Formation and evolution of the Solar System
In about 600 million years, the Sun brightness will have disrupted the Carbon Cycle to the point that trees and forests (C3 photosynthetic plant life) will no longer be able to survive and in around 800 million years, the Sun will have killed all complex life on the Earth's surface and in the oceans.

  • Can I get sunburnt through glass?
Ordinary glass absorbs 97 per cent of the UVB rays that cause sunburn and some skin cancers, and 37 per cent of the less harmful UVA radiation. This translates to a protection of about SPF30, so you can still get burned with long enough exposure. Car windscreens have a plastic layer bonded between two layers of glass and this blocks all the UVB and 80 per cent of the UVA, making sunburn very unlikely.

  • Coal Ash Is More Radioactive Than Nuclear Waste
the waste produced by coal plants is actually more radioactive than that generated by their nuclear counterparts. In fact, the fly ash emitted by a power plant—a by-product from burning coal for electricity—carries into the surrounding environment 100 times more radiation than a nuclear power plant producing the same amount of energy.

clarification found in the footnote : "ounce for ounce, coal ash released from a power plant delivers more radiation than nuclear waste shielded via water or dry cask storage."

estimated radiation doses ingested by people living near the coal plants were equal to or higher than doses for people living around the nuclear facilities.

authors emphasize that other products of coal power, like emissions of acid rain–producing sulfur dioxide and smog-forming nitrous oxide, pose greater health risks than radiation.
