Virtual IP Addresses and Their Discontents for Database Availability
A VERY interesting article about virtual IPs, and switching for failover.

For basic switching, the virtual IP is defined of the 1st host : ifconfig eth0:0 192.168.128.130 up
If this host goes down, there is just to define the VIP anew on the spare host, and voilà.
NB : if "ifconfig" complains "Command not found", consider "/sbin/ifconfig"
